It is a nucleophilic compound and reacts with the sulfhydryl group in cysteine. 2CNB also reacts with the thiol group of proteins, which are involved in many cellular processes. 2CNB has industrial uses, such as for the production of cyclohexanone and cyclopentanone. The structures of 2CNB and its homologues have been studied by 13CNMR spectroscopy, which provides information about the type of bonds present in the molecule and their lengths.
