It is used in the synthesis of drugs and their metabolites. 1-Chloroethyl chloroformate reacts with fatty acids to produce chlorocarbons, amines, and hydrogen chloride. This reaction is used as an analytical method for determining the presence of amines in drugs or drug metabolites. Cefpodoxime proxetil is a drug metabolite that results from the hydrolysis of cefpodoxime by esterases or glucuronidases, oxidation by cytochrome P450 enzymes, reduction by glutathione reductase, or conjugation with glucuronic acid. 1-Chloroethyl chloroformate can also be used to synthesize fluorinated benzimidazoles such as trifluoroacetic acid from its precursor, trifluoroacetic anhydride.
