It also has antibacterial activity and inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to single-stranded DNA, which prevents DNA replication. 1-(2-Chloroethyl)piperidine hydrochloride binds to DNA with tetradentate coordination, forming a stable complex which does not allow the DNA polymerase to bind to the single strand. 1-(2-Chloroethyl)piperidine hydrochloride can be detected using mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectra.
