2-Cyano-N-methyl-acetamide is a white solid that belongs to the section of heterocycles, with a molecular weight of 122.2 g/mol. It has two asymmetric carbon atoms and there are three possible stereoisomers in this compound: 2-cyanoacetamide (syn), 2-cyanomethylacetamide (anti) and 2-methylacetylamide (gauche). The most stable form is the syn form, which has an approximate melting point of 147°C. The anti form has a melting point of 121°C, while the gauche form melts at 124°C. In addition to its use as an organic solvent, 2-cyanoacetamide can be used as a reagent in organic synthesis for the alkylation of ketones and aldehydes. This reaction is catalysed by organocatalysts such as dimethylacetylenedicarboxylate or formamide
