2-Chloro-4-methyl-thiazole (CMTH) is an anion that has shown antiviral activity against herpes simplex virus (HSV). CMTH inhibits the replication of HSV by binding to the viral DNA polymerase, which prevents the synthesis of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and subsequent protein synthesis. CMTH also binds to nucleophilic sites on the viral DNA polymerase, forming a covalent bond that inactivates this enzyme. This drug also exhibits immunocompetence, as it increases antibody production in animals. CMTH is used for the treatment of neonatal herpes infection as life-threatening infections are rare with this population. The oral form of CMTH is marketed under the trade name Zovirax.
