3-Chloro-2-methylbenzenesulfonyl chloride is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that inhibits the activity of 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase and blocks the conversion of cortisone to cortisol. It has been shown to be effective in treating abnormalities associated with adipose tissue and may be useful for the treatment of obesity. 3-Chloro-2-methylbenzenesulfonyl chloride also binds to human 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1, which prevents the conversion of cortisone to cortisol. The crystal structure of this compound was determined using X-ray diffraction analysis, showing that it is present as a dimer in crystalline form. 3CMBBS also interacts with other tissues, such as the adrenal gland and uterus, where it acts as an inhibitor.
