Cholesterol hydrogen phthalate is a mesomorphic compound that is soluble in organic solvents, such as ethanol. Cholesterol hydrogen phthalate has been used to enhance the solubility of taxol, an anti-tumor drug. This compound also contains functional groups that are important in the synthesis of fatty acids and tocotrienols.
