It has been used to detect the presence of carboxylate ions in urine samples and as an analytical chemistry reagent. The absorbance spectrum of 4'-carboxybenzo-18-crown 6-ether overlaps with the nmr spectra of potassium ion, which allows it to be used as a potassium ion detector. It has also been shown that this molecule is immobilized on surfaces by hydrogen bonding interactions.
