Cistanoside D is a pentacyclic triterpenoid, which belongs to the class of oleanonic acid glycosides. It is an inhibitor of protein synthesis and may be used in the treatment of autoimmune diseases. Cistanoside D has been found to have anti-inflammatory properties and inhibitory effects on the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β, TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-8. This compound also contains a hydroxyl group that can be used for chemical modification. The acetate extract from this compound has shown inhibitory properties against various bacteria, including methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
