Cyclanoline chloride is a diphenyl ether that inhibits the activity of the enzyme dehydrotrametenolic acid, which is involved in the biosynthesis of the stephania alkaloids. It also has potential as an antidiabetic agent, as it can inhibit sugar uptake by pancreatic cells and has been shown to reduce blood sugar levels in diabetic animals. Cyclanoline chloride also inhibits protein synthesis and acts as a cytotoxic agent, inhibiting the growth of cancer cells. This drug is converted to methylated derivatives by cytochrome P450 enzymes and may be metabolized through hydrolysis or dechlorination reactions with glutathione reductase or other reductases.
