It has been shown to bind to the hydroxyl group of the coumarin ring and inhibit the growth of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. 3-Cyano-4,6-dimethylcoumarin also inhibits the growth of fungi by binding to the hydroxyl group on a phenolic hydroxyl substituent. 3-Cyano-4,6-dimethylcoumarin can be used as an antimicrobial agent for various types of infections.
