It crystallizes in the monoclinic system with space group P2/a and has an asymmetric unit of 8 molecules. The compound can be synthesised from styrene, pyridine, and carbon dioxide. 4-Cyanobenzaldehyde oxime has been shown to inhibit platelet aggregation at high concentrations, which may be due to its ability to bind to platelets and block the platelet receptor GPIIb/IIIa. It also exhibits mesomorphic properties and is chiral. 4-Cyanobenzaldehyde oxime yields are around 57%.
