It has been shown to inhibit the growth of Candida parapsilosis, an opportunistic fungal pathogen, with a halide anion and a catalytic inorganic base. 4-Chloro-2-nitrobenzonitrile also inhibits the activity of butyrylcholinesterase, which is an enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine in the brain and nervous system. This compound may be useful in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals as well as other synthetic applications.
