3-Chlorophthalide is a reactive aromatic hydrocarbon that can be used as a solid catalyst to produce chlorinated organic compounds. It is soluble in alcohols and organic solvents, but not water. 3-Chlorophthalide has been shown to react with chloride, halides, pyridinium, or acid catalysts to produce hydrogen chloride as an oxidation product. This product is typically used in the production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). 3-Chlorophthalide can also be used as a chlorine source for use in deionized water.
