Saponins are a group of triterpenoid saponin compounds that have been shown to exhibit inhibitory activity against various proteinases and lipases. H-D-Cys-OH is a type of saponin that has been found to inhibit the growth of cells in culture by preventing the release of growth factors, such as nerve growth factor. H-D-Cys-OH also has anticomplement activity and an inhibitory effect on reactions with a low yield. It has been observed to be more active than its enantiomer, D-Cys-OMe, in inhibiting the release of growth factors. The chemical structures for H-D-Cys-OH and D-Cys-OMe are shown below:
