CREBtide is a regulatory domain that regulates the transcription of genes that encode proteins involved in the regulation of cardiac cells. CREBtide regulates the expression of these genes by binding to CREB, which is a protein that acts as an auto-inhibitor for CREBtide. Phosphorylation of CREB by CREBtide leads to deactivation and subsequent release of CREB from its auto-inhibitory domain. This binding can be inhibited by proteolysis or caspase-3, which are key regulators in apoptosis. The regulatory activity of CREBtide can also be measured in cellular models using surrogate markers such as troponin I and II (TnI and TnII), which are proteins found in cardiac muscle cells and can be used as indicators for heart function.
