Carboxyatractyloside potassium salt (CA) is an adenine nucleotide analog that has been shown to activate the respiratory chain of mitochondria in lung epithelial cells. CA may have proton conductive properties and genotoxic potential. It can also cause mitochondrial membrane permeability and cytotoxicity. In vivo studies have shown that CA is toxic at high doses, but exhibits low toxicity at low doses. CA has been shown to exhibit various bioactivities, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, and antimicrobial activities.
