Clinopodiside A is a triterpenoid saponin isolated from the stem bark of Melastoma malabathricum. Clinopodiside A has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects in in vitro and in vivo studies. It also has an effect on the promotion of collagen synthesis and inhibition of inflammation. Clinopodiside A may be helpful for the treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and ulcerative colitis. The extract is prepared from the dried stem bark of Melastoma malabathricum by hydrolysis with aqueous sodium hydroxide followed by extraction with chloroform. The product can be used for the diagnosis and treatment of inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and ulcerative colitis.
