1-Chloro-6-iodohexane is a bifunctional, epoxide-forming reagent that can be used to synthesize prostaglandin synthetase inhibitors. This compound is also used in Friedel-Crafts acylations with hexane as the solvent and potassium thioacetate as the acid catalyst. It has been shown to react with a grignard reagent in nonpolar solvents such as dimethylformamide or hexane, forming a covalent adduct. 1-Chloro-6-iodohexane has been shown to catalyze the reduction of organic compounds by hydrogen gas, which may be useful for the synthesis of organic compounds from alcohols or carbohydrates.
