Chorismic acid is a p-hydroxybenzoic acid that is used as a flavoring agent and a precursor to other aromatic compounds. It also inhibits the enzyme activity of anthranilate synthase, which is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of chorismate to anthranilate. Chorismic acid has been shown to have inhibitory properties on the growth of some cancer cells. The signal peptide sequence in chorismic acid has been shown to be important for its biological activities in plants. Chorismic acid binds to polymerase chain reaction (PCR) inhibitors and may inhibit DNA replication by binding to the enzyme DNA gyrase.
