Chlorofluoroacetamide is a reactive, chemical inhibitor that binds to the amide group of proteins and reacts with the hydroxyl or nitro groups. It was first synthesized as a model system for protein target validation studies, but has also been shown to have tumor-suppressing effects. Chlorofluoroacetamide irreversibly inhibits the enzyme activity of epidermal growth factor (EGF) and has been shown to be effective in inhibiting tumor cell proliferation. Chlorofluoroacetamide can react with an ethylene diamine molecule to form a stable nitrochloroamine compound. This compound may inhibit tumor cell proliferation by reacting with DNA nuclei and preventing cell division.
