Chloropentafluoroacetone is a chemical compound with the formula ClCFClO. It is a colorless solid that reacts as an acid catalyst with metal hydroxides to give metal chlorides and hydrogen fluoride. The compound is made by the reaction of phosphorus pentoxide and chlorine gas at temperatures of 400-600 °C, followed by treatment with water to produce hydrogen chloride gas. Chloropentafluoroacetone has been used in phase chromatography as a solvent for ionic compounds and in organic synthesis as an agent for removing protons from molecules in order to break them down into smaller molecules. It can be used for the synthesis of linear molecules, such as polychlorotrifluoroethylene.
