It reacts with diphenyl ether to form 3,3'-bis(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)diphenyl ether, which is a fungicide. This chemical can also be used to produce bromophenols, or compounds that are used as flame retardants and plasticizers. 3-[2-Chloro-4-(Trifluoromethyl)phenoxy]phenyl acetate has been shown to increase thermogenesis by binding to albumin and activating the thyroid hormone receptor.
