It has been used as an alternative to the herbicide 2,4-D for weed control in crops. 2,4-D is a phenoxy herbicide that contains a phenylmethyl group and has been linked to damage of human health and the environment. The methyl ester side chain of 2-chloro-4-(trifluoromethyl)-5-thiazolecarboxylic acid allows it to be taken up by plants through their roots and leaves, protecting them from other environmental stresses such as drought or heat. This drug is also an inhibitor of lipid synthesis, which can cause germination problems for seedlings.
