This compound has been shown to bind to the Fe ion and to undergo an intramolecular hydrogen transfer reaction. 1,1'-(2-Hydroxy-5-methyl-1,3-phenylene)diethanone has also been used as a macrocycle that can be assembled into supramolecular structures with metal ions. This molecule is magnetic and its magnetic properties have been studied by electrochemical methods.
