S-(4-Nitrophenyl)-L-cysteine is a nucleophilic organophosphorus pesticide that specifically inhibits the enzyme acetylcholinesterase. It has been shown to be an efficient paraoxon metabolite. S-(4-Nitrophenyl)-L-cysteine has been synthesized in the lab and tested in vitro against Aeropyrum pernix, which is a hyperthermophilic organism. The compound was not shown to inhibit its growth. This chemical is used as a pharmaceutical intermediate and can also be found in some food products.
