3,9-Dimethyl-7H-purine-2,6,8-trione (3,9-DMPU) is a purine metabolite. It can be oxidized by the enzyme peroxidase to produce 3,9-dimethyluric acid and hydrogen peroxide. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy has shown that 3,9-DMPU is oxidized electrochemically at a constant potential of 1.2 V vs. Ag/AgCl and produces cyclic voltammograms with oxidation peaks at 0.25 V and 0.75 V vs. Ag/AgCl. 3,9-DMPU is also hydrated in alkaline solutions to form oxopurines and their derivatives such as 7-(3,9-dimethylpurinomethyl)xanthine (xanthine).
