3,7-Dihydroxy-2-naphthalene-carboxylic acid (DHNA) is a methyltransferase inhibitor which inhibits the activity of DNA methyltransferases. DHNA has been shown to have cytotoxic effects on prostate cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. DHNA also has pro-apoptotic effects and can inhibit the expression of pro-inflammatory proteins such as TNFα, IL1β and IL6. This compound may be useful for the treatment of bowel diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
