The mechanism for its antibacterial activity is currently unknown. It has been found to be soluble in water at a concentration of 0.1 M and can be detected in wastewater samples. 3,5-Dinitrobenzoic acid has been shown to react with 2,4-dichlorobenzoic acid to form 2-nitrobenzyl alcohol and 4-chlorophenylhydrazine. This reaction also produces hydrogen gas that can cause explosions when mixed with air or other combustible materials. The structure consists of two benzene rings attached to nitro groups
