This compound is synthesized from the reaction between acetone and formaldehyde, which produces a dioxolane ring. The reaction products can be profiled using gas chromatography to determine the ratio of each product. 3,3-Dimethyl-1,2-butanediol has been shown to have enantiomeric purity of greater than 99%. It has also been used as a chiral building block for the synthesis of carbohydrates with stereospecificity. 3,3-Dimethyl-1,2-butanediol's enzyme catalysis is used in the production of polyesters and polyurethanes.
