2,6-Diiodopurine is a purine that is used as an antimicrobial agent. It has been shown to be effective against MRSA and other bacteria. 2,6-Diiodopurine binds to sepiapterin, which is required for the biosynthesis of guanine. This binding prevents the formation of the enzyme ligand with the nonclassical chloride ion, preventing both the synthesis of purines and the synthesis of pyrimidines. This drug also inhibits cancer by catalysing DNA repair through inhibition of phosphoribosyltransferase.
