Voriconazole is a drug that belongs to the group of azoles, which are used to treat fungal infections. It is a lipophilic compound that has a solid form and can be administered orally or intravenously. Voriconazole has been shown to be effective against cryptococcal meningitis, histoplasmosis, aspergillosis, blastomycosis, coccidioidomycosis, and paracoccidiomycosis. The crystallization of voriconazole is industrially carried out by recrystallization from methanol in order to produce a purer product. Voriconazole solubility in water is low due to its hydrophobic nature. Impurities such as fumaric acid may be present in voriconazole due to the synthesis process.
