It is the product of the metabolism of 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid. 2,5-Dimethylbenzoic acid has a functional group which consists of a carboxylic acid group and two methyl groups. The acidic nature of this compound can be seen through its reaction with camphora, as well as its hydrolysis by hydrochloric acid. This compound also has protease activity when it comes into contact with human urine. 2,5-Dimethylbenzoic acid can be synthesized using solid-phase chemistry and chemical biology techniques. It has been shown to have a functional role in the production of proteins that are involved in cellular signaling pathways such as chemotaxis and apoptosis.
