2-(3,5-Difluorophenyl)acetonitrile is a compound that has been used as an antibacterial agent. It inhibits the growth of gram-negative bacteria by binding to their cell wall and deforming it. This leads to the rupture or lysis of the bacterial cell membrane. 2-(3,5-Difluorophenyl)acetonitrile has been shown to be active against S. aureus; however, it does not inhibit gram-positive bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumoniae or Listeria monocytogenes.
