Ivabradine is a drug that lowers heart rate by blocking the rapid, repetitive firing of electrical impulses in the atria. It has been shown to be an effective treatment for congestive heart failure and chronic stable angina. Ivabradine also causes a decrease in myocardial infarct size in animal studies, which may be due to its ability to increase energy metabolism in cardiomyocytes. Ivabradine has also been found to have anti-inflammatory properties that may be due to its ability to inhibit the production of inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β).
