Descripción

1-(2,5-Dimethoxyphenyl)ethanamine is a racemic mixture of two enantiomers. It is an intermediate in the synthesis of several pharmaceutical compounds including the antidepressant Anafranil, the antihistamine Telfast, and the antipsychotic Serentil. The chiral center is attached to the carbon adjacent to the phenyl group. This molecule can be synthesized by reacting chloroformic acid with an aldimine. The product is a salt that has acidic properties and can be hydrolyzed to form mandelic acid or acetylated to form mandelic acid methyl ester. Optical resolution of this compound involves separating these two enantiomers by fractional crystallization or chromatography.
