Deoxyribonuclease (DNAase) is a glycosylated enzyme that hydrolyzes the phosphodiester bond of deoxyribonucleic acid. It is used in the treatment of myocardial infarcts and other heart diseases. Deoxyribonuclease has been shown to be effective in reducing the incidence of maternal blood clots and its use may reduce post-partum hemorrhage. This enzyme also has a role in the removal of nuclear DNA, which can lead to apoptosis and cell death. Deoxyribonuclease binds to DNA by means of a signal peptide at one end and a basic protein at the other end. The enzyme then cleaves the phosphodiester backbone of DNA, releasing two nucleotides at each cut. Deoxyribonuclease is an enzyme that belongs to the family of glycosylases, which are enzymes that catalyze reactions involving hydrolysis or transfer of glycosyl groups from one
