3-(Dimethylamino)butan-1-ol is a hydrophobic and selective acetylcholine receptor agonist that has been shown to increase the affinity of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. The drug has been shown to have a high selectivity for the neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subtypes, which may be due to its modification with dimethylcarbamate. 3-(Dimethylamino)butan-1-ol has also been shown to be an inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme that breaks down the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. This causes increased levels of acetylcholine in the brain, leading to improved functionality in areas such as memory and learning.
