2-(Dimethylamino)butanoic acid is a fatty acid that belongs to the group of short-chain fatty acids. Short-chain fatty acids are necessary for the synthesis of carnitine, which plays an important role in fat metabolism. 2-(Dimethylamino)butanoic acid has been shown to have anticancer properties in animal studies. This drug may act by stimulating cell death through a growth factor-mediated mechanism. 2-(Dimethylamino)butanoic acid also inhibits uptake by neurons and blocks the GABA transporter GAT-1, thereby increasing the availability of GABA in the brain and enhancing its inhibitory effects on neuronal activity.
