5,7-Dihydroxy-4-propyl-2H-chromen-2-one is a coumarin derivative that has been synthesized from 2,5,7,8,-tetrahydroxychromene. This compound is an inhibitor for the enzyme gyrase and topoisomerase IV. It is used in human cell lines as a fluorescent probe to study the effects of drug resistance on these enzymes. 5,7-Dihydroxy-4-propyl-2H-chromen-2-one has shown activity against the human pathogen Streptococcus pneumoniae and may be effective against other bacteria resistant to antibiotics such as methicillin.
