3,3-Dichloro-1,3-dihydro-2H-indol-2-one is a crystalline compound with a molecular weight of 177. It is a white solid that is soluble in acetone, chlorinated solvents, and n-methylpyrrolidone. 3,3'-Dichloroindole can be prepared by the reaction of aniline with hydrogen chloride gas in acetone or chlorinated solvents. The compound is used as an intermediate for other organic syntheses. Equimolar amounts of 3,3'-dichloroindole and salicylaldehyde react to form 2-(4-chlorophenyl)-5-(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)thiophene (TCPT).
