It has high electrophoretic homogeneity, which makes it suitable for use in analytical laboratories. 2-(Dimethylamino)propanenitrile binds to ionisable groups such as amines and buffers, which can interfere with its use in some analytical tests. 2-(Dimethylamino)propanenitrile also binds to cellulose acetate and can be found in sedimentation fractions or on the surface of the gel layer. 2-(Dimethylamino)propanenitrile may show optical activity when it is underivatized, but this property disappears when it is derivatized.
