2-(1,3-Dioxo-1,3-dihydro-2H-isoindol-2-yl)-3-methylpentanoic acid is an organic compound that is chiral. The structure of the molecule is similar to that of the amino acid alanine. It has been shown that irradiation can produce a racemic mixture of this compound. Chiral compounds are optically active and have two nonidentical mirror images. This means they rotate the plane of polarized light in opposite directions. The solvents used to make this compound are thionyl chloride and isophorone.
