3,5-Dinitro-4-methylaniline (3,5-DMA) is a redox potential compound that can be used as a substitute for nitrobenzene in the preparation of polyclonal antibodies. 3,5-DMA has been shown to inhibit enzyme activity in the dry weight of bacteria and to cause physiological effects. It has also been identified in urine samples of patients with stenotrophomonas maltophilia and can be used to identify this organism. 3,5-DMA binds to DNA by reacting with amino groups on the base pairs of DNA and inhibits polymerase chain reaction. This inhibition can be reversed by adding trifluoroacetic acid. 3,5-DMA reacts with nitro groups on the amino acids tyrosine or tryptophan and is used for detection of these residues in proteins or peptides using monoclonal antibodies.
