2,6-Di-tert-butylphenol is a phenolic compound that binds to calcium and inhibits the activity of enzymes. It has been shown to be an inhibitor of mitochondrial functions in a model system. 2,6-Di-tert-butylphenol has also been shown to have antiinflammatory properties, which may be due to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis. The antioxidant properties of 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol are related to its ability to scavenge free radicals and chelate metal ions such as copper.
2,6-Di-tert-butylphenol has been used as a pharmacological agent in the treatment of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. This drug is also used for the treatment of acute inflammation caused by injury or infection.
