2-((Diphenylmethylene)amino)acetonitrile is a hydantoin that can be used as a hydrogenation catalyst. It is prepared from an imine, sulfate, and gramine by the transfer of an acetyl group to the nitrogen atom. The high yield for this reaction is due to the addition of lithium diisopropylamide and argon gas, which are used for catalysis. This method has been shown to be effective in synthesizing 2-((diphenylmethylene)amino)acetonitrile in high yield.
