5,6-Dichloropicolinic acid is a hematophagous insecticide that is used to control mosquitoes and other insects. It is commonly used in devices that are designed to attract, kill, and repel insects. 5,6-Dichloropicolinic acid may be used as a biocidal agent against vector organisms such as mosquitoes, which transmit diseases like malaria. The mosquito larvae are particularly susceptible to the effects of this substance. This compound has been shown to be repellent and larvicidal at concentrations between 10 ppm and 1000 ppm. 5,6-Dichloropicolinic acid also has behavioral effects on the insect when applied topically or ingested by the insect.
