1,1-Dichloroethylene (1,1-DCE) is a solvent that can be stabilized with MEHQ. This chemical has the potential to cause cytosolic Ca2+ release and oxidative stress in cells. It also has the ability to reduce redox potentials and can react with hydrogen fluoride and sodium citrate to produce p-hydroxybenzoic acid and chloride. 1,1-DCE is water soluble and nonreactive at physiological levels. However, it is reactive at higher concentrations. 1,1-DCE is an experimental model for vinylidene chloride polymerization reactions.
