The 1,2-Diphenyl-1,2-ethanediol (mixture of isomers) has optical properties, which can be used for the development of new materials with improved performance. For example, this compound has been used in magnetic resonance spectroscopy to study cell culture and hydrochloric acid. The asymmetric synthesis of this compound is achieved through a reaction between hydrobenzoin and chiral carbonyl compounds. There are two possible enantiomers that can be produced from this reaction. One enantiomer is a potent inhibitor for bortezomib, a drug that is used to treat multiple myeloma. This compound also exhibits strong hydrogen bonding interactions with ruthenium complexes and binding constants towards polymer films.
