1,1-Diphenylhydrazine HCl is a chemical compound that belongs to the group of aryl hydrazines. The drug binds to the active site on the enzyme aldehyde oxidase, which catalyzes the conversion of aldehydes and hydrogen peroxide into alcohols and water. It has been shown that 1,1-diphenylhydrazine HCl inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to the bacterial chloride channel in their cell walls. This binding prevents the entry of chloride ions into the cell wall, which is necessary for bacterial growth.
